Our Story

We are a nonprofit organization born out of the legacy of Dr. Victoria Mathis, who selflessly dedicated her life to assisting others in various capacities, including emotionally, spiritually, and financially. Now, in honor of her memory, family and friends have come together to carry forward her mission by establishing the Dr. Victoria Mathis Foundation.

Our efforts include offering scholarships, providing mentorship to students on their educational paths, and extending support to chiropractic students and doulas alike. As our foundation continues to evolve, our primary aim is to expand our reach, assisting as many students as possible to help combat the maternal health crisis.

Our Impact

We’ve finished our first year of operations — where were able to launch two distinct programs, each tailored to unique sets of students based in both of Dr. Victoria’s alma maters. Our journey began with Crispus Attucks High School, where we unveiled our scholarship opportunity to all graduating seniors. From this pool of exceptional candidates, one standout student captured our hearts with their dedication and promise. We’ve wrapped our first year of programming. We were able to launch two distinct programs, each tailored to unique sets of students.

Additionally, we've instituted a dedicated mentorship program for Indianapolis high school graduates attending Kentucky State University, ensuring that our commitment to empowering young minds extends beyond financial aid. Starting with a student from KIPP Indy, as he embarks on his academic journey at Kentucky State University. Leveraging Dr. Victoria's profound impact during her time there, we've facilitated valuable connections for him. Each semester we extend our support by offering our signature ‘Care Package’, containing essential household and food items to aid him through the semester.

Our Mission

In the next phase of giving via the foundation, we want to support chiropractic students who are interested in birth work. Dr. Victoria, having completed her birth and postpartum doula certifications along with her Webster technique certification, was committed to expanding her skill set to better serve pregnant mothers.

In the US, Black moms are 75% more likely to suffer a maternal abuse or mortality during, immediately after or in the 6 weeks following the birth of their child. This is an incredibly large disparity compared to their counterparts.

Dr. Victoria wanted to give back to those who had the same mission as her, to create a "safe space" for moms to progress through their pregnancies and have a healthy labor, birth, and postpartum experience. Her doula business, 'Safe Space Birthing Services,' epitomized this dedication. In the words of Dr. Victoria "I am here to help women trust their God-given strength to birth."

We honor Dr. Victoria's legacy by providing scholarship funds to chiropractic students pursuing birth work certifications.
